Question 1

A masonry contractor assigns a laborer to help dismantle and move a supported scaffold on a job site. Before the work starts, the site superintendent wants to document the laborer's training. Which arrangement meets the training requirement for this laborer?

Show answer and source

Answer: D. A competent person trains the laborer to recognize the hazards of the work, including the correct procedures for disassembling and moving this type of scaffold

The standard requires that each employee involved in disassembling or moving a scaffold be trained by a competent person to recognize the hazards of the work, including the correct procedures for that type of scaffold. Seniority-based on-the-job instruction does not satisfy this, because the trainer must be a competent person.

Question 2

A masonry contractor will have laborers work from a supported scaffold and stage pallets of concrete block on its platform. The planned training session for these laborers covers fall hazards, falling object hazards, and how to access the platform. The safety manager reviews the plan against the scaffold training requirements. Which additional topic must the training cover for these employees?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. The maximum intended load and the load-carrying capacities of the scaffolds used

Because the laborers will stack heavy pallets on the platform, the standard's required training areas apply, including the maximum intended load and the load-carrying capacities of the scaffolds used. The other topics may matter on a masonry job, but the scaffold training provision does not list them.

Question 3

A crew of laborers will work from a supported scaffold set up beside a building, with energized overhead power lines running near the work area. A qualified person trained them on proper use of the scaffold, handling materials on the platform, and fall hazards. Electrical hazards were not discussed. The superintendent says the training is complete because a qualified person delivered it. What does the standard require here?

Show answer and source

Answer: B. The training must also cover the nature of the electrical hazards in the work area, since the power lines are present

The standard requires training to include the nature of electrical, fall and falling object hazards in the work area, as applicable. Energized lines near the scaffold make electrical hazards applicable, so leaving them out is a gap even though a qualified person gave the training. The idea that the trainer's qualification alone makes the training adequate is wrong because the content must also fit the hazards present.

Answer B rests on
