Question 1
During a walk-through, a safety professional finds a stored pressure dry chemical extinguisher with a mild steel shell. It was last hydrostatically tested 9 years ago. The shell shows no corrosion or damage, and it has not been in a fire or discharged. The employer wants to know whether the unit is due for a hydrostatic test. What is the correct determination?
Show answer and source
Answer: C. It is not yet due, because the test interval for this type of extinguisher is 12 years
OSHA's standard lists a 12-year hydrostatic test interval for stored pressure dry chemical extinguishers with mild steel, brazed brass or aluminum shells. At 9 years with no damage, the unit is not yet due. The 5-year interval applies to water types and carbon dioxide units, and the interval is not limited to damaged units.

Question 2
A distribution center provides portable extinguishers for employee use. It holds one group education session each January. A new warehouse associate starts in June, and the supervisor plans to include the associate in next January's session. What should the safety professional tell the supervisor?
Show answer and source
Answer: A. This is not compliant, because the education must be provided upon initial employment and at least annually after that.
OSHA's standard requires the extinguisher education program upon initial employment and at least annually afterward. Waiting for the next January session leaves the new associate without education for months. Designation to fight fires is not a condition for this education, and the standard sets no six-month waiting period.
Answer A rests on
