ASP vs CSP: what's the difference
The ASP and CSP side by side, from BCSP's own pages: who qualifies, how long each exam is, what it costs, and what each blueprint weights most.
Published October 16, 2026. Facts checked against the sources listed below.
The ASP is usually the first step and the CSP the senior credential. Holding the ASP is one of the ways to meet the CSP's credential requirement, so many people take the ASP first and the CSP once they have four years of experience.
Side by side
| Requirement | ASP | CSP |
|---|---|---|
| Education | Bachelor's in any field, or an associate in safety, health or the environment | Bachelor's degree |
| Experience | 1 year of safety, health and environment (SH&E) work | 4 years of SH&E work |
| Credential needed first | None | A BCSP Qualified Credential, such as the ASP or GSP |
| Time allowed | 5 hours | 5.5 hours |
| Application fee | $160 | $160 |
| Exam fee | $350 | $350 |
| Blueprint domains | 9 | 7 |
For both, at least half of the qualifying experience must be preventative, professional-level safety work. BCSP's pages give the full wording, and fees can change, so confirm on bcsp.org before you apply.
What each exam weights most
- ASP: Safety Programs and Concepts is the largest domain at 25%. Fire Prevention and Protection and Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health are next at 12% each. Mathematical Calculations is 10%.
- CSP: Advanced Application of Safety Principles and Program Management are 25% each, so half the exam. Risk Management is 15%.
The ASP leans more on technical fundamentals, including a dedicated math domain. The CSP leans more on managing programs and risk. You can see every domain and its weight on our ASP and CSP pages.
Rules that apply to both
- After BCSP approves your application, you have one year to take and pass the exam.
- You can schedule a retake no sooner than six weeks after your last attempt.
Which one should you take?
If you have under four years of qualifying experience, or no qualifying credential yet, the ASP is the one you can sit now. If you already hold the ASP, a GSP or another qualified credential and have four years of experience, you can go straight to the CSP. The exam eligibility checker walks through your own situation.
