During a periodic inspection of a conveyor line's lockout/tagout procedure, the inspector observes that a maintenance mechanic skipped a required step when isolating the equipment. The employee's training records are current and were completed six months ago. What does the standard require the employer to do?
- A. Conduct additional retraining, because the inspection revealed deviations in the employee's use of the energy control procedures
- B. Reassign the lockout duties to an affected employee who has not been observed deviating
- C. Wait until the next annual inspection to determine whether retraining is warranted
- D. Take no action, because the training certification is current and records are up to date
The standard requires additional retraining whenever a periodic inspection reveals deviations from or inadequacies in an employee's use of the energy control procedures, regardless of how recent the earlier training was. Current certification does not excuse the deviation, and lockout/tagout may be performed only by authorized employees, so reassigning it to an affected employee is not an option.
“Additional retraining shall also be conducted whenever a periodic inspection under paragraph (c)(6) of this section reveals, or whenever the employer has reason to believe, that there are deviations from or inadequacies in the employee's knowledge or use of the energy control procedures.”
