ASP question for October 17, 2026

The ASP question of the day for Saturday, October 17, 2026, on scaffolding. Pick an answer to see the explanation and its source.

ASP Domain 2: Safety Programs and Concepts

A crew is working from a two-point adjustable suspension scaffold fitted with an overhead protection canopy. The supervisor plans to tie each worker's lanyard to a separate vertical lifeline. Each lifeline would be anchored to a structural steel member of the building, independent of the scaffold, and padded at the roof edge to prevent abrasion. Is this fall arrest plan acceptable?

Show answer and source

Answer: D. No. Vertical lifelines cannot be used on a two-point suspension scaffold that has overhead components such as a canopy, so another permitted attachment method is needed.

OSHA's scaffold rule, 29 CFR 1926.451(g)(3), bars vertical lifelines on single-point or two-point adjustable suspension scaffolds that have overhead components such as overhead protection. Proper anchorage, independence, and abrasion protection matter only where vertical lifelines are allowed, so the plan fails. Separate lifelines per worker do not cure this. Outrigger beams are excluded as anchorage; building structural members qualify.

On the job

A site superintendent on a masonry restoration project plans a two-point adjustable suspension scaffold with an added platform level above the main deck for a second crew. The safety coordinator points out that vertical lifelines cannot be used where overhead components, such as additional platform levels, are part of the scaffold. The superintendent drops the lifeline plan and has the crew select a different permitted fall protection arrangement.

Answer D rests on

“Vertical lifelines shall not be used when overhead components, such as overhead protection or additional platform levels, are part of a single-point or two-point adjustable suspension scaffold.”
