CSP Domain 2: Program Management
A manufacturing plant logged 23 OSHA-recordable injury and illness cases last year. Its 430 employees worked a total of 864,000 hours. What is the plant's total recordable incidence rate per 100 full-time workers?
Show answer and source
Answer: A. 5.32
The BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) incidence rate formula is (cases × 200,000) / hours worked: (23 × 200,000) / 864,000 = 5.32. The 200,000 base equals 100 employees working 40 hours a week for 50 weeks. A 100,000 base gives 2.66, and a 2,000,000 base gives 53.24. The formula does not produce 6.42. The employee count is not needed because actual hours are given.
On the job
An EHS manager at a metal stamping plant is preparing the annual benchmark report. She takes the year's recordable case count, multiplies it by 200,000, and divides by the hours employees actually worked. The 200,000 base stands for 100 employees working 40 hours a week for 50 weeks, so the result is a rate per 100 full-time workers that can be compared against published industry figures.
Answer A rests on
BLS, How To Compute Your Firm's Incidence Rate for Safety Management(opens bls.gov in a new tab)“(Number of injuries and illnesses X 200,000) / Employee hours worked = Incidence rate (The 200,000 hours in the formula represents the equivalent of 100 employees working 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year, and provides the standard base for the incidence rates.)”
