A trainer is leading a confined space entry class. She plans to have each person at the table read one step of the rescue procedure aloud, going around the room in order. Before she starts, a worker tells her quietly that he is nervous about reading in front of others. What should the trainer do?

Answer: B. Ask for volunteers to read aloud, and never call on anyone who does not volunteer
OSHA's training resource says to ask for volunteers when reading aloud is part of an activity and never to call on someone who does not volunteer. Skipping one person still singles him out. Assigning a short step still calls on him. Making reading required is the opposite of what the guidance says.
On the job
A safety coordinator at a food processing plant is leading a lockout/tagout class and plans to have participants take turns reading the equipment-specific procedure aloud. A mechanic mentions he struggles with reading. She changes the activity to a call for volunteers and does not call on anyone who stays quiet, so no one is pushed into reading in front of coworkers.
