Medical services and first aid on construction sites, for the CHST exam. Every rule and number here is cited to its primary source, on screen. In this lesson, you'll learn to: explain when a trained first-aider must be at the worksite, state the first aid kit container and weekly check rules, apply the transport, posting, and 911 location requirements, and identify when quick drenching or flushing facilities are required.
0:30 Foundation: 1926.50(a) and (b)
50 is the construction medical services and first aid rule. Two duties come first. The employer shall insure the availability of medical personnel for advice and consultation on occupational health. And provisions for prompt medical attention in case of serious injury must be made prior to commencement of the project.
0:51 Who renders first aid
Paragraph (c) turns on one question: is medical care reasonably accessible? If an infirmary, clinic, hospital, or physician is reasonably accessible in time and distance, and available to treat injured employees, no on-site first-aider is required. If not, a person with a valid first-aid training certificate shall be available at the worksite to render first aid.
1:22 First aid supplies
Acceptable training: Bureau of Mines, American Red Cross, or equivalent training verified by documentary evidence. Paragraph (d) covers supplies and kits. First aid supplies shall be easily accessible when required. Kit contents go in a weatherproof container, with individual sealed packages for each type of item.
