ASP Domain 4: Fire Prevention and Protection
A crew is decanting flammable solvent from drums into smaller containers inside an enclosed room of a building under construction. The room's temporary power has been shut off, so the supervisor hands out inexpensive hardware-store battery-powered work lights for the task. Which action is required before the work continues?
Show answer and source
Answer: B. Replace them with portable battery-powered lights of a type approved for hazardous locations
OSHA's construction fire prevention rule, 29 CFR 1926.151(a)(4), requires portable battery-powered lighting used while storing, handling, or using flammable liquids or gases to be a type approved for hazardous locations. The rule names battery units, so shutting off power does not exempt them. Switching lights on outside the room or adding wire guards does not make an ordinary light approved.
On the job
An EHS manager inspects a paint storage and mixing room on a building project where flammable liquids are handled. Workers are carrying ordinary battery-powered work lights, and the manager points out that the rule covers battery units, so a lack of wiring is no exemption. The manager has the lights removed and supplies portable battery-powered lights of a type approved for hazardous locations before the work continues.
