CSP question for October 18, 2026

The CSP question of the day for Sunday, October 18, 2026, on exposure control methods (engineering first). Pick an answer to see the explanation and its source.

CSP Domain 3: Risk Management

At the end of a shift, an environmental services worker is handling two pairs of heavy-duty reusable utility gloves that were used to clean blood-contaminated surfaces in a procedure room. Pair 1 is visibly soiled but its rubber is intact, flexible and free of defects. Pair 2 has peeling material across the fingers and palm. Which handling of the gloves complies with the standard?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. Decontaminate Pair 1 for reuse and discard Pair 2 because it shows deterioration

OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(3)(ix)(C), lets utility gloves be decontaminated for reuse while intact; cracked, peeling, torn or punctured gloves must be discarded. Soiled but intact Pair 1 can be decontaminated; peeling Pair 2 must be discarded. The no-reuse rule covers disposable gloves only. Peeling gloves cannot be reused for any task, and soiling alone does not require discarding.

On the job

An EHS manager reviewing a laboratory's glove reuse practice sorts a bin of reusable utility gloves after a spill cleanup. One pair is stained but supple and defect-free, so it goes to decontamination for reuse. Another shows cracking at the knuckles, so it is discarded. Condition decides the outcome: intact gloves can be decontaminated, while gloves that are cracked, peeling, torn or punctured cannot be reused.
