Question 1

A phlebotomist finishes a draw and removes her gloves. She has no visible contamination on her hands, and she plans to start the next patient's paperwork right away and wash up later at the end of her shift. What does the standard require?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. Wash hands immediately or as soon as feasible after removing gloves or other PPE

The standard requires handwashing immediately or as soon as feasible after removing gloves or other PPE, whether or not contamination is visible. Delaying until the end of the shift or relying on visible blood does not meet this requirement.

Answer A rests on

29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(2)(v)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“Employers shall ensure that employees wash their hands immediately or as soon as feasible after removal of gloves or other personal protective equipment.”

Question 2

A fabrication shop's air monitoring shows that, even with a well-maintained local exhaust ventilation system and wet-cutting methods in place, employee exposure to respirable crystalline silica remains above the PEL. The employer has confirmed that no additional feasible engineering or work practice controls are available. What does the silica standard require the employer to do?

Show answer and source

Answer: B. Keep using the feasible engineering and work practice controls to reach the lowest feasible exposure level and supplement them with compliant respiratory protection

The standard requires that feasible engineering and work practice controls be used anyway to reduce exposure to the lowest feasible level, supplemented by respiratory protection. Dropping the controls in favor of respirators alone is wrong because the controls must still be used even when they cannot reach the PEL.

Answer B rests on

29 CFR 1910.1053(f)(1)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“Wherever such feasible engineering and work practice controls are not sufficient to reduce employee exposure to or below the PEL, the employer shall nonetheless use them to reduce employee exposure to the lowest feasible level and shall supplement them with the use of respiratory protection that complies with the requirements of paragraph (g) of this section.”

Question 3

At the end of a shift, an environmental services worker is handling two pairs of heavy-duty reusable utility gloves that were used to clean blood-contaminated surfaces in a procedure room. Pair 1 is visibly soiled but its rubber is intact, flexible and free of defects. Pair 2 has peeling material across the fingers and palm. Which handling of the gloves complies with the standard?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. Decontaminate Pair 1 for reuse and discard Pair 2 because it shows deterioration

Utility gloves may be decontaminated and reused only while their integrity is intact, so Pair 1 qualifies. Pair 2 is peeling, which is a sign of deterioration, so it must be discarded. The single-use rule applies to disposable gloves, not utility gloves, so discarding both is not required.

Answer A rests on

29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(3)(ix)(C)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“Utility gloves may be decontaminated for re-use if the integrity of the glove is not compromised. However, they must be discarded if they are cracked, peeling, torn, punctured, or exhibit other signs of deterioration or when their ability to function as a barrier is compromised.”
