ASP question for October 27, 2026

The ASP question of the day for Tuesday, October 27, 2026, on hot work and welding. Pick an answer to see the explanation and its source.

ASP Domain 4: Fire Prevention and Protection

A maintenance crew is cutting up cadmium-plated steel brackets inside a ventilated indoor workshop. No local exhaust ventilation is set up, and no one has taken atmospheric tests. The supervisor says the welders can simply wear standard dust masks. Which action does the standard require before this work continues?

Show answer and source: 29 CFR 1910.252(c)(9)(i)

Answer: C. Use local exhaust ventilation or airline respirators, unless worst-case atmospheric tests show safe exposure

OSHA's welding standard says indoor cutting of cadmium-coated metal needs local exhaust ventilation or airline respirators unless atmospheric tests under the most adverse conditions show exposure is acceptable. Dust masks with general ventilation, shorter shifts, and a fume respirator indoors are not allowed alternatives. The fume-respirator option is described for outdoor work.

On the job

A foreman at a hardware manufacturing plant is told that rework crews will torch-cut cadmium-coated steel parts inside the main building. The EHS manager asks whether anyone has run atmospheric tests under the most adverse conditions. None exist, so the manager sets up local exhaust ventilation at the cutting bench and has airline respirators on hand. The welding standard requires one or the other indoors unless such tests show acceptable exposure.

“In confined spaces or indoors, welding or cutting operations involving cadmium-bearing or cadmium-coated base metals must be done using local exhaust ventilation or airline respirators unless atmospheric tests under the most adverse conditions show that employee exposure is within the acceptable concentrations specified by 29 CFR 1910.1000.”
