CSP Domain 1: Advanced Application of Safety Principles
A technician must replace a sensor on a control circuit that runs at 24 volts to ground. The circuit cannot cause burns or an arc blast, and the work adds no explosion risk. A coworker says the circuit must be shut off and de-energized before any work starts. What is the correct response under the electrical safety-related work practices standard?
Show answer and source: 29 CFR 1910.333(a)(1)
Answer: B. The circuit need not be de-energized, because it is under 50 volts to ground and the work adds no increased exposure to burns or arc explosion.
OSHA's electrical safety-related work practices standard exempts live parts under 50 volts to ground from de-energizing when there is no increased exposure to electrical burns or arc explosion. Those conditions are met here. A 12-volt limit is not in the rule. A written waiver is not part of the rule. The exemption does not apply if exposure to burns or arc explosion would increase.
On the job
A plant electrician is asked to relocate a low-voltage indicator lamp on a 12-volt panel that is live to ground. The foreman confirms the live parts operate at less than 50 volts to ground and that the work adds no increased exposure to electrical burns or arc explosion. Based on that exemption, the circuit is not de-energized, and the lamp is moved with power on.
