CSP Domain 4: Emergency Management

A machine shop cuts magnesium parts, and the work produces shavings every week. The shop keeps containers of Class D extinguishing agent at a station that is 90 feet of travel from the cutting area. What must the employer do?

Show answer and source: 29 CFR 1910.157(d)(6)

Answer: A. Move the Class D agent so no point is over 75 feet of travel away, since shavings occur at least every two weeks

OSHA's portable fire extinguisher standard requires Class D protection where metal shavings are generated at least every two weeks, with travel distance of 75 feet or less. Weekly shavings trigger the rule, so a daily trigger is wrong. 90 feet exceeds the limit. The 50-foot limit applies to Class B hazards, not Class D.

On the job

A safety coordinator at a fabrication shop is auditing a bay where titanium turnings are swept up at least every two weeks. The Class D agent is stored 100 feet of travel from the far end of the bay. Since combustible metal shavings are generated at least once every two weeks, the coordinator has the agent relocated so that no point in the bay is more than 75 feet of travel from it.

Study aid, not site-specific safety advice. The official rule controls.

Answer A comes from

29 CFR 1910.157(d)(6)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“The employer shall distribute portable fire extinguishers or other containers of Class D extinguishing agent for use by employees so that the travel distance from the combustible metal working area to any extinguishing agent is 75 feet (22.9 m) or less. Portable fire extinguishers for Class D hazards are required in those combustible metal working areas where combustible metal powders, flakes, shavings, or similarly sized products are generated at least once every two weeks.”
