CSP question for October 24, 2026

The CSP question of the day for Saturday, October 24, 2026, on forklifts, cranes, slings and aerial lifts. Pick an answer to see the explanation and its source.

CSP Domain 1: Advanced Application of Safety Principles

While preparing a new battery-changing area for electric lift trucks, a safety professional reviews the plan. It includes a designated charging room with an eyewash-style flushing station for spilled electrolyte, fire extinguishers, ventilation for gassing batteries, and wheel guards protecting the chargers from truck impact. Batteries would be removed from trucks by two workers who slide them onto a cart and then lift them onto the charging rack by hand. The plan also states that a carboy tilter will be used for electrolyte. Which gap in the plan does the standard require to be corrected?

Show answer and source: 29 CFR 1910.178(g)(4)

Answer: A. The plan must provide a conveyor, overhead hoist, or equivalent material handling equipment for handling batteries instead of hand lifting

OSHA's powered industrial truck rule, 29 CFR 1910.178(g)(4), requires a conveyor, overhead hoist, or equivalent equipment for handling batteries, so hand lifting is the gap. Having flushing, fire protection, ventilation, and charger guards does not cover this item. A carboy tilter is allowed under (g)(6), and (g)(1) requires charging in a designated area, not the truck parking area.

On the job

A plant engineer at a paper mill is signing off on a new storage battery room for electric forklifts. Fire protection, ventilation, and a spill station are all in place, but the procedure has electricians muscling each battery off the truck by hand. The engineer sends it back until a hoist is added, since a conveyor, overhead hoist, or equivalent material handling equipment must be provided for handling batteries.
