Short answer
You take a BCSP exam by computer at a Pearson test center under a live proctor. Bring an unexpired government ID with your photo and signature that matches your BCSP name exactly; expect a palm vein scan and security screening, an on-screen TI-30XS calculator, no formula sheet, and a clock that keeps running during breaks.

This covers the ASP, CSP and CHST, which BCSP delivers the same way. Everything below comes from BCSP's and Pearson VUE's own pages, listed under Sources. Where they are silent, we say so rather than guess.
In short
- Where: a Pearson test center, by computer, with a live proctor in the room. BCSP's August 2026 exam security post says the only other option is Onsite Exam Delivery, which an employer or organization has to arrange.
- Bring: one unexpired, government-issued ID with your photo and signature. The name must match your BCSP record exactly, or you will not be allowed to test.
- Check-in: digital signature, palm vein scan, photo and security screening that may include infrared and metal-detector wanding.
- Leave in the locker: phone, smart glasses, headphones or earbuds, notes, your own calculator, food and drink.
- On screen: a TI-30XS-style calculator. You also get a whiteboard and marker. There is no formula sheet; a question that needs a formula includes it.
- Breaks: allowed, but the exam clock keeps running and you must stay in the building.
- Results: BCSP says you get them before you leave the test center.
How long each exam is
BCSP's Credentials At-A-Glance sheet (V.2026.04.01) gives the time allowed. The halfway column is simple arithmetic, so you can check your pace once during the exam.
| Exam | Time allowed | Halfway point |
|---|---|---|
| ASP | 5 hours | 2 h 30 min |
| CHST | 4 hours | 2 h |
| CSP | 5.5 hours | 2 h 45 min |
Ordered alphabetically. BCSP's Complete Guide says the clock starts when you begin the exam itself, after the agreements and the optional tutorial.
Before exam day
Schedule only through Pearson VUE. After you buy the exam, BCSP emails an exam authorization with scheduling details. Book on Pearson VUE's BCSP page or by phone (Pearson lists 866-717-3653, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central). BCSP's Complete Guide says local test centers do not schedule BCSP exams, so don't call one.
Find your reschedule deadline now. Pearson's FAQ says the deadline to reschedule or cancel, and any fee, vary by testing program and are stated in your appointment confirmation email. BCSP's public pages we checked don't give a number, so read that email and keep it.
Check your ID against your BCSP record. BCSP's 2022 post says that if the name on your ID doesn't match the name on file exactly on test day, you cannot sit for the exam. Also check the expiry date. If your name has changed, fix your record well before exam day. The step-by-step ASP application guide shows where your record lives in My Profile.
Ask for accommodations before you schedule. BCSP says to email accommodations@bcsp.org before scheduling. Accommodations must be pre-approved and cannot be requested at the test center.
Practice on the calculator you will actually use. BCSP's Complete Guide says the on-screen calculator emulates the TI-30XS, and test centers neither provide a physical one nor let you bring your own. It advises learning it beforehand so you don't lose time once the clock starts. Work the examples on the ASP formula sheet, CSP formula sheet or CHST formula sheet on a TI-30XS or its emulator.
Run one full-length timed session. Sitting for 4 to 5.5 hours is its own skill. Our guide to what your practice score means explains how to use a timed set without over-reading the score.
Check-in, step by step
BCSP's August 2026 post lists the order. Arrive early; it does not give a minute count, and neither does Pearson's general advice ("plan to arrive early").
- Present your ID. Government-issued, unexpired, with photo and signature.
- Sign and verify. You give a digital signature, have a palm vein scan and have your photo taken.
- Store your things. Pearson centers have lockable storage. Phones, smart glasses, headphones, earbuds, notes and calculators are not allowed in the room. BCSP's 2022 post adds that food and drinks are not allowed either.
- Security screening. This may include infrared and metal-detector wanding.
- Read and sign the rules. BCSP's 2022 post says you will sign the Pearson VUE Candidate Rules Agreement on arrival.
- Get your instructions and sit down. A live proctor stays in the room for the whole exam.
At the computer
Two agreements first. You must accept BCSP's Code of Ethics and its examination security and confidentiality agreement before the exam opens. Both commit you to not sharing exam content.
Take the tutorial. It is short, it shows the screen layout, and BCSP's Complete Guide says the exam clock does not start until you begin the exam itself.
How questions look. One question on screen at a time, four options and one best answer. You can mark a question, skip it and return to any marked or skipped question from the item number before you submit.
Math. If a question needs a formula, the formula is in the question, unless the question is testing whether you know it. BCSP's Complete Guide says computed answers are usually rounded, so pick the option closest to your result. You work by hand on the whiteboard the center provides.
Unscored questions. BCSP's 2022 post says roughly 12% of the questions are beta items being piloted for future exams. They are mixed in and not marked, so give every question your best answer.
Breaks. You can take breaks whenever you want, but the clock does not stop, you must stay in the building, and you cannot get to your belongings. Plan around your halfway point from the table above.
After you submit
BCSP's Complete Guide says you receive your result before you leave the test center, and BCSP's 2022 post says you can view your score report in your Pearson VUE account. If you did not pass, how to read your BCSP score report explains the domain-by-domain numbers and how to turn them into a retake plan.
BCSP's August 2026 post also says it runs statistical analysis and data forensics on results after the exam to spot irregularities. Don't post or discuss specific exam questions afterwards; the agreements you signed forbid it.
Exam-day checklist
- Confirmation email saved, with the reschedule deadline noted
- Route and travel time to the test center checked
- ID: unexpired, government-issued, photo and signature, name matches BCSP exactly
- Accommodations, if any, approved by BCSP before scheduling
- Comfortable with the TI-30XS keystrokes for logs, exponents and roots
- Your exam's halfway time memorized (you can't bring notes in)
- A meal before you go, since food and drink stay outside the room
For the study plan that comes before all this, see how to pass the ASP exam, how to pass the CSP exam or how to pass the CHST exam.
FAQ
Can I bring my own calculator to a BCSP exam?
No. BCSP provides an on-screen calculator that emulates the TI-30XS. Test centers don't provide a physical calculator or let you bring one.
Is there a formula sheet on the ASP, CSP or CHST?
No. You can't bring one and BCSP doesn't hand one out. A question that needs a formula includes it, unless the question is testing whether you know the formula.
Does the clock stop for breaks?
No. BCSP says you can take self-scheduled breaks, but the exam clock keeps running and you must stay in the building.
Can I take a BCSP exam online from home?
BCSP's August 2026 exam security post says its exams are delivered at Pearson test centers, unless an organization has arranged Onsite Exam Delivery. It does not describe an at-home option, and every exam has a live proctor in the room.
What ID do I need?
One government-issued, unexpired ID with both your photo and your signature. The name must match your name on file with BCSP exactly.
When do I get my results?
Before you leave the test center, per BCSP's Complete Guide. The score report is also in your Pearson VUE account.
How do I reschedule my BCSP exam?
Through Pearson VUE's BCSP page or by phone, not through the local test center. Pearson says the deadline and any fee depend on the testing program and are in your appointment confirmation email.
