Question 1

During an audit, a safety professional compares three documents for one solvent. The written hazard communication program's chemical list names it "Brightwork Degreaser 12," and the SDS is titled "Brightwork Degreaser 12." The supplier's container label identifies the product only as "BD-12 Industrial Cleaner." No document shows both names, and nothing else links them. Which conclusion is correct under the definition of product identifier?

Show answer and source

Answer: C. The documents are deficient, because the identifier must allow cross-references among the chemical list, the label and the SDS, and the label's name cannot be matched to the other two.

The product identifier must permit cross-references among the written program's chemical list, the label and the SDS. A label name that cannot be matched to the other two documents defeats that purpose. The specific chemical identity is a separate concept, and the definition allows a name or number as the product identifier.

“The product identifier used shall permit cross-references to be made among the list of hazardous chemicals required in the written hazard communication program, the label and the SDS.”
Question 2

A chemical manufacturer has supplied a solvent to the same customer for several years, and that customer received an SDS with its initial shipment. Last week the manufacturer revised the SDS to add newly learned protective measures. The customer has not asked for anything and now places a routine reorder. What must the manufacturer do?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. Make sure the customer gets the revised SDS with this reorder, since it is the first shipment after the update, either enclosed or sent no later than the shipment

The standard requires an appropriate SDS with the first shipment after the SDS is updated, not just with the initial shipment. The manufacturer may enclose it or send it before or at the time of the shipment. Waiting for a request is wrong because the duty applies without one.

“(6)(i) Chemical manufacturers or importers shall ensure that distributors and employers are provided an appropriate safety data sheet with their initial shipment, and with the first shipment after a safety data sheet is updated;”
