Question 1

A crew needs to move an oxygen cylinder to a different work area on a flatbed truck. The cylinder is not on a special carrier. Which action is required before the cylinder is moved?

Show answer and source

Answer: D. Remove the regulator and put the valve protection cap in place

The standard requires regulators to be removed and valve protection caps put in place before cylinders are moved, unless the cylinders are firmly secured on a special carrier made for that purpose. Leaving the regulator on exposes the valve and fittings to damage. Powered-vehicle transport also requires cylinders to be secured vertically, so laying the cylinder down is wrong.

“Unless cylinders are firmly secured on a special carrier intended for this purpose, regulators shall be removed and valve protection caps put in place before cylinders are moved.”
Question 2

A crew has been told to cut open a steel drum with a torch so it can be reused as a burn barrel. The drum previously held a flammable solvent, and no one has prepared it. Which of the following is an acceptable way to prepare the drum before any cutting is started?

Show answer and source

Answer: B. Fill the drum with water, or thoroughly clean it of the substance and then ventilate and test it

The standard requires drums that have held toxic or flammable substances to be either filled with water or thoroughly cleaned, ventilated and tested before cutting. Merely wiping the exterior, sealing the drum, or adding more solvent does nothing to meet that requirement, and sealing it would trap pressure.

“Drums containers, or hollow structures which have contained toxic or flammable substances shall, before welding, cutting, or heating is undertaken on them, either be filled with water or thoroughly cleaned of such substances and ventilated and tested.”
Question 3

A welder opens the valve on an acetylene cylinder and smells gas. Soapy water shows bubbles around the valve stem. She closes the valve and tightens the gland nut, but when she reopens the valve the stem still leaks. The cylinder is still about half full, and the crew wants to finish the shift's work. What action does the standard require?

Show answer and source

Answer: B. Discontinue use of the cylinder, tag it properly, and remove it from the work area

The leak is at the valve stem and did not stop after the gland nut was tightened. The standard then requires the cylinder to be taken out of use, tagged, and removed from the work area. The regulator exception applies only to a leak through the valve seat, not to a stem leak.

“If, when the valve on a fuel gas cylinder is opened, there is found to be a leak around the valve stem, the valve shall be closed and the gland nut tightened. If this action does not stop the leak, the use of the cylinder shall be discontinued, and it shall be properly tagged and removed from the work area.”
