Question 1

A safety manager hires an outside trainer to deliver the annual bloodborne pathogens session at a dental clinic. The trainer is a certified general-industry instructor but has never worked in or studied healthcare settings. Which requirement of the standard is most at risk of not being met?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. The trainer must be knowledgeable in the subject matter of the training elements as it relates to the workplace the training will address

The standard requires the person conducting the training to be knowledgeable in the subject matter as it relates to the specific workplace. It does not require a medical license, vaccination status, or employment by the clinic.

Answer A rests on

29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2)(viii)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“The person conducting the training shall be knowledgeable in the subject matter covered by the elements contained in the training program as it relates to the workplace that the training will address.”

Question 2

A hospital laboratory sends blood specimens to a reference lab each day. Several individual tubes of patient blood are placed in a rigid transport bin that has a biohazard label firmly attached to its outside. The tubes inside have no biohazard labels of their own. During a walkthrough, a new safety technician says the tubes are out of compliance with the bloodborne pathogens labeling requirements. Which response is correct?

Show answer and source

Answer: B. The practice is compliant because individual containers placed inside a properly labeled container for storage or transport are exempt from labeling.

The standard exempts individual containers of blood or other potentially infectious materials from labeling when they are placed in a labeled container during storage, transport, shipment or disposal. The tubes sit in a labeled bin, so no further labeling is needed. Requiring decontamination or a red bag misreads the standard: the decontamination exemption applies to regulated waste, and red bags may be used as a substitute for labels but are not mandatory.

Answer B rests on

29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(1)(i)(G)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“Individual containers of blood or other potentially infectious materials that are placed in a labeled container during storage, transport, shipment or disposal are exempted from the labeling requirement.”

Question 3

A dialysis clinic completed annual bloodborne pathogens training for all staff four months ago. The clinic now introduces a new procedure for handling and disposing of contaminated sharps, which changes how technicians are exposed to blood during setup and teardown. What does the standard require the employer to do for the technicians?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. Provide additional training on the new exposures created by the procedure; it may be limited to that new content

The new procedure changes the technicians' occupational exposure, so the standard requires additional training when the change occurs, and that training can be limited to the new exposures. Waiting for the annual refresher is wrong because the recent annual training does not cover the changed exposure. Repeating the full program is unnecessary because the additional training may be limited.

Answer A rests on

29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2)(v)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“Employers shall provide additional training when changes such as modification of tasks or procedures or institution of new tasks or procedures affect the employee's occupational exposure. The additional training may be limited to addressing the new exposures created.”
