Question 1

A maintenance crew is evaluating a mobile ladder stand with locking casters. The stand's tallest work surface is 12 feet above the floor and its shortest base dimension is 2.5 feet. No outriggers or counterweights are fitted. Which action does the standard require before employees use it at that height?

Show answer and source

Answer: B. Add outriggers, counterweights, or comparable means to prevent overturning, because the height exceeds four times the shortest base dimension

Four times 2.5 feet is 10 feet, so a 12-foot work surface exceeds the limit and needs outriggers, counterweights, or comparable stabilization. Locking the casters addresses horizontal movement, not overturning, and the standard sets no six-times limit.

Answer B rests on

29 CFR 1910.23(e)(1)(vi)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“The maximum work-surface height of mobile ladder stands and platforms does not exceed four times the shortest base dimension, without additional support. For greater heights, outriggers, counterweights, or comparable means that stabilize the mobile ladder stands and platforms and prevent overturning must be used;”

Question 2

A maintenance shop supervisor finds a worker using an air nozzle to blow metal chips off a milling machine table. The shop's compressed air line is regulated to 50 p.s.i. at the nozzle. The worker wears safety glasses, and a small deflector shield is positioned near the nozzle. What should the supervisor require?

Show answer and source

Answer: A. Reduce the air pressure at the nozzle to less than 30 p.s.i. and keep effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment in use

The standard allows compressed air for cleaning only when reduced to less than 30 p.s.i. and used with effective chip guarding and PPE. Guarding and PPE alone do not make 50 p.s.i. acceptable, and the standard does not ban compressed air outright.

Answer A rests on

29 CFR 1910.242(b)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)
“Compressed air shall not be used for cleaning purposes except where reduced to less than 30 p.s.i. and then only with effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment.”
