Fit test
A test of how well a tight-fitting respirator seals on a particular person, done qualitatively or quantitatively.
Definition, in the source's words
29 CFR 1910.134(b)(opens ecfr.gov in a new tab)“Fit test means the use of a protocol to qualitatively or quantitatively evaluate the fit of a respirator on an individual. (See also Qualitative fit test QLFT and Quantitative fit test QNFT.)”
What it means
Under 1910.134(f)(2), employees using tight-fitting facepieces are fit tested before first use, whenever a different facepiece (size, style, model or make) is used, and at least annually. A qualitative test is allowed only for negative pressure air-purifying respirators that need a fit factor of 100 or less.
Example
A worker passes an annual fit test on a medium half mask. The company switches to a different brand. The worker needs a new fit test on the new model before using it, even though last year's test is still current.
